This guide is not intended to be a comprensive guide to winning at Tokimeki Memorial; rather, it is intended to give an English-speaking person enough knowledge to begin to play the game. It presumes no knowledge of the Japanese language.

Format

Translated Japanese is in quotes.  Comments are in brackets.

Where Japanese text is used, the format is in MS Mincho and not any kind of Japanese encoding. To view it, use the "Western" or "English" encoding on your browser. If you don't know what that means, don't worry: your computer is set properly if you normally surf the web in English.

Platform

Tokemeki Memorial was played with the original disk on a PSOne purchased in Japan. Please do not send questions about playing Tokimeki on non-Japanese consoles or making copies of the disk. Be sure to use a voltage adapter that correctly transforms your power source to the console's.

Introduction

Before getting too far into this guide, the reader should understand that he must learn a good deal of Japanese to play Tokimeki Memorial. Most of the game is dialogue-driven: 'button-mashing' action is limited to a few of the mini-games. This guide shows only the Kanji (written Japanese) needed to understand some fundamental concepts, but you need to learn much more [more than I know at this time] to fully appreciate the game.

Learning Japanese

Tokimeki Memorial is actually quite a good tool for learning Japanese. There are three alphabets in Japanese: Hirigana, Katakana and Kanji. The Latin alphabet (the one used in English) is called 'romaji' and is only used for cosmetic purposes or concepts which cannot be expressed any other way. Hirigana and Katakana (together known as Kana) are phonetic alphabets: speaking each syllable the way it is spelled gives you, more or less, the correct pronunciation.

Tokemeki's instruction manual has Hirigana characters (called 'Furigana') over the Kanji. This way, younger players who can speak Japanese but may not be able to read the Kanji can read the manual. [Furigana is also very helpful when using Microsoft's IME to type in the Kanji].

Generally, Hirigana is used for Japanese words and Katakana is used for words borrowed from other languages (usually English). It is strongly recommended that you learn both Hiragana and Katakana, but absolutely necessary that you learn Katakana. If you can read Katakana, you can usually recognize the English word. [Learning Katakana is the dark side, the quick and easy path (much like learning to program in BASIC), and you should concentrate on Hirigana first if you intend to take your study of Japanese very far.]

There are many resources on the Internet for learning Kana. I recommend ChipChat: http://www.chipchat.com/NihonGo/

"Start Button: Start game, select items from name entry screen."

"O button: make selection/choose commands"

"X button: in name entry screen's letter change"

[X button cont.]

"Cancel selected commands if options have been created."

[This is an important difference between Japanese and American games. In American games, the 'X' button is usually used to make choices and the 'O' button is used to cancel them. In Japan, it's the other way around.]

"At the ending, all lines of the TV screen will display regardless of the button pressed. Pressing the button will only affect display of the letters. [This is a guess; I haven't gotten to the ending]"

"Push L1, R1, Select, and Start simultaneously for about 4 seconds to reset the current game."

"This game is designed exclusively for the Playstation mouse."

"To connect, insert the mouse into controller port 1. Use the mouse on a level surface of about 18 by 20 cm."

"When the game is played with the mouse, the mouse moves the cursor."

"The mouse's selection buttons change the established settings."

p.8

[The first thing to do before starting Tokimeki is to make sure you have enough memory available. A basic save takes up two 'blocks' of data, as shown in the memory browser. To start the browser, start the playstation without a game disk inserted. The memory blocks are on the right; make sure at least two of them are empty.]

"After the Konami logo and the opening demo, the title screen appears."

"Use the direction keys to choose 'Game Start' [ゲームスタート] or 'Option' [オプション] and press the Start button to make your selection."

"Game Start"

"At the selection of 'Game Start' , the data load screen will appear."

"First-time players of this game should select 'New'.(ニュー)"

[At this point, you will be prompted to choose a slot to store the game in. Move the cursor down to the number '1' and press O twice. You will be given the choice to create a new file: press O again for 'yes' (はい). You will be taken to the name entry screen (p. 11)]

"Also, the game save/load screen is available here if a memory card with data from a previous game has been inserted in 'Memory Card Slot 1'."

"About 'Data Load'"

"Select this at start time to create a new album."

"'Copy' - copy from one data block to another."

"'New [ニュー]' - Create data in new album (when playing for the first time)."

"To start the game over, restore previous data from the prologue."

"'Clear' - Erase data."

"'Load [ロード]' - select to continue a saved game."

p. 9: "Options"

"The 'Option' selection is available on every screen."

"Character Display Speed: Select character display speed of速い(fast), 普通(medium) or遅い(slow)."

"Icon Mode: Select one of three command icon sequence types:"

"TYPE A: Playstation original arrangement."

"TYPE B:PC engine typing arrangement."

"Mouse setup: mouse setup selection."

"Select button: 'Right button select/Left button select' setup appears."

"Click mode-'single click/double click' setup appears."

"You will be returned to the 'Study' icon when you leave the 'click speed' setup."

"Menu-Like: cursor is restricted to menu operations."

"Menu-A: Commands are in a certain order. Pressing the 'up' and 'left' direction keys brings up the previous command. Pressing the 'down' and 'right' keys brings up the next command."

"Menu-B: All direction keys move towards the command in that direction."

p. 10

"Mouse-Like + Menu-A: Movement is mouse-like unless L1 is pressed, in which case movement becomes like Menu-A."

"Voice Mode: Select from 3 types of voice output."

"ON: Voice is always on."

"OFF: Voice is always off."

"X button cutoff: Voice is usually on, but can be cutoff by the X button."

"Extra: this option requires a memory card."

"While making progress with the game, you can store various extras on the memory card."

"Option Exit: exit options, return to 'Start/Option' screen."

p.11: "Name Entry"

['O' selects a character and 'X' goes back one space (to be overwritten). The button in the lower left corner confirms the name in a field and goes to the next field.

The first field is your family name, the name others will call you throughout the game (even Yoshio calls Shiori 'Fujisaki'). If three spaces seems short, remember that most people's names are in Kanji. Make up a name or at least learn how to write yours in Katakana. The middle field is your given name, and the separate field on the right is your nickname. Latin letters are in the third set of characters, scrolling down a couple of pages.

Next, enter your birthdate and blood type. is the month and is the date.

After entering all the data, you will be asked to confirm it. Press O over 'yes' (はい) or 'no' (いいえ) to go back and re-enter.

After entering your data, you must enter Fujisaki's birthdate and blood type.

Press 'Start' to skip the prologue if you wish.]

“During the date, the player chooses how to behave.”

“The choices are shown in the dialogue display area at the bottom of the screen. Make a choice with the cursor and ‘circle’ button.”

[This is where you will feel the most handicapped by not knowing Japanese. Your only cue is the girl's facial expression after making a decision. You might restart the game each time after a poor reaction, but this is a very slow way to progress.]
